I am excited to see this backyard studio take shape. Happy to have a skillful framer and a pile of kiln dried FSC certified lumber. I stopped by just in time to help lift that big beam into place. A challenging job for a solo framer.

I was very happy to see this recent project full of people enjoying the newly connected living spaces and yard. The owners also built several nice cabinets and shelving themselves. These are just phone snapshots of the space…..and yes it does look like they might need a new couch at some point. Turned out great! (Thanks Berkeley Craftsman)

These are just snapshots – client is not fully moved in – but they are very happy with the remodel, as am I. (Thanks Berkeley Craftsmen) The basic idea was to add a bedroom and improve the street presence. In addition to adding a bedroom we gained a small parlor or office and relocated the main living space to the back with a nice connection to the garden.

My Oakland correspondent saw this curious tower addition on an Oakland bungalow. I’d love to see it from the inside.

I’d like to try the charred cedar, especially if it is truly durable/weather-resistant. The composting heating system is cool… might not work for everyone. The place looks great!

Matt has the trellis underway (on the left building.) He plans to train a rose to grow on the redwood slats. Mavis and Atticus try sitting on the covered porch in the evening light.

If you haven’t used up all of your NYT articles for the week, take a look at this article about a very slender house in Warsaw. I would love to go inside and see how it feels to be in such a tall, narrow space. (4′ at the widest)
Red Metal Roofs and Warm Brown Stucco

Matt made some progress on the little buildings while I was gone. He chose a warm brown integral color stucco and a red standing seam roof. You can’t see it very well in this photo, but the door to the right is an old salvaged door with a window and some nice details.
Looking good!
