These photos are from a 1948 William Wurster house in Orinda. Many strange additions and remodels have happened over the years, but there remain some nice remnants of the original design. I am looking forward to bringing back the original charm and adding some new charm too.

I also realized that I never shared these photos of the dining room and hallway in that same project. So many great details.

I think I was waiting because the owner plans to recover the purple couch in a deep blue to match the windows. Might never happen.

This bedroom was part of a recent full house remodel in Rockridge. I finally had a chance to publish a few photos. Due to the multicolor light, the colors are not perfect in these photos, but hopefully you can get the idea.  Photos are by Nancy Kalter-Dills.

This one shows the pair of colorful stained glass casement windows – A collaboration with Sabina Frank of Berkeley. It also shows the steel bed designed by myself to go with the windows and fabricated by Frank Trousil in Richmond.  Lights are from Metro Lighting in Berkeley and the flooring is ash.

The next few show the custom closet system fabricated by Martin Lee in Oakland.  My favorite part is the picture frames built into the doors. This gives the owner the opportunity to personalize the doors that they look at from the bed every day.

Hard to see in this photo, but Martin created crafty little wooden levers to hold in the picture and the glass on the inside of the door.

Walls up

It is always exciting to see the building take shape, and nice when it feels bigger than expected.

The first three shots here are showing the site work for a new little ceramic studio. We are saving that little citrus tree and the foundation will angle around it. This will create an interesting interior space with a cozy sitting area on one end and a wider studio area at the other.  The lot slopes down to the right and we are adding a retaining wall along the property line to level the lot. The concrete walls will be board-formed and hopefully look very nice.

Here you see a new 3/16″ thick steel awning recently installed. Gonzalvo is installing the lag screws. There will be another similar awning over the doors above. I tried to talk the owner into painting them bright blue or fireball orange to match their front door, but she chose a more conservative and very classy grey brown. Kind of like wrought iron.

This is a different job. They have just installed that 3/16" Steel Awning. Very Heavy. (Thanks for the photo Steve Coleman)

Two New Projects

All that is left of the old shed is a pile of concrete rubble. (Photo J. McBride)
A very small addition in Richmond – for now it is an open air kitchen while they sister the cantilevered floor joists. Nice coordinated outfits guys. (Photo T. Malloy)
