Why weaken the post with cut outs when you could use a wood burner and a stencil to etch some neat designs? Native American geometric patterns and clan figures would look cool. Nobody is doing this. You could start a trend.
That sounds cool too, I agree. No need for a stencil.
Or maybe a router and paint. Think of it as “tatoos for a house”. $ $
